Launch of the Cultural Olympiad
at RCPYC

The Great and Good of KCC chose our Club as the venue for the launch party for the cultural and social events planned for the 4 year build up to the 2012 Olympics, including the bid to have Dover again as the arrival point for the Olympic flame. The Club was packed to the gunwales with dignitaries and guests, including 30-year-old James Morgan from Deal, a Bronze Medallist oarsman in the Paralympics, with music before and after the splendid fireworks display over the Castle on the Harbour. Entertainment was provided by a versatile trio of musicians covering everything from bossa nova to sea shanties, and a sumptious buffet provided by Jenny, from which the numerous Club members present stole the occasional morsel!

CLUB SUCCESSES IN RAMSGATE WEEK

RCPYC boats recorded a successful week of competition at Ramsgate Regatta.

Hilary Graves with New Limit with a relatively experienced crew achieved sixth place overall in a large entry in the strong Cruiser Class whilst Stephen Jones on Mirage came a superb third on the last day.

Pride of place though went to Ken Lees skippering Rush which despite lying mid week in third place in the competitive Spinnaker Class rattled off five straight wins from Thursday onward to claim First Place in the Class and the Hornby Industries Trophy.

This was Ken’s first Regatta with his Sigma 35 and was extremely pleased with its performance in the extremely varied weather conditions that appeared during the week. ‘It took a couple of days for the crew and myself to settle into racing mode but after that we were flying and thanks to a great effort from everybody we bagged the silverware,’ said the proud owner and skipper. The crew of Rush for the week were RCPYC members Dave Sinnock, Andy and Stuart Hills, Ian Laram, Bernard Sealy and Ned Brophey.

Hilary Lister pennantHilary Lister visit
On March 7th we were fortunate to have Hilary Lister as our visiting speaker. Despite her youth, Hilary is already one of Britain’s sailing legends, as the first quadriplegic person to sail solo across the Channel and round the Isle of Wight. In a beautifully illustrated talk she described how she overcame her disability to achieve this feat, and outlined her even more ambitious plan to circumnavigate Britain later this year. Richard Gaskell also described how Hilary came to realise “The Dream” partly through the work of Sailing Opportunities, a Kent-based charity of which he is chairman. The packed audience in the LW Bar were equally impressed by Hilary’s achievements and charmed by her personality, and made a generous contribution to the work of the Trust. The Commodore presented her with a Club Pennant, which she will wear on her trip, and we were pleased that she has accepted Honorary Membership of RCPYC. We look forward to giving her a good send-off in June.
